Waiting time for approval is atrocious

We brought our old van in to a shop in Florida to find out why it was not acting right. After investigating it appeared our transmission was shot. I gave the warranty information to the mechanic who called the warranty company.By the way, we were sent to this mechanic by the warranty company. The mechanic explained the problem and they said they would have to come out and investigate before they could give approval. That was on a January 4th. I was told to rent a car for the weekend until my car was ready. I did. I called each day to the mechanic and was told the representative had not come in yet and he couldn't do anything with my vehicle until he had approval. On Friday January 10th I received a call from my brother in Oregon that his wife had passed away suddenly. My sister was in Orlando with her daughter's family and drove down here while my other brother and I spent the day trying to secure 4 seats as quickly as possible to fly out ASAP to be with our brother. It was a tragic loss since she was young and had never been sick before. I called the mechanic and they said they still had not heard. I asked for the number of the warranty company and proceeded to call them to explain our dilemma. They said they would try to expedite the approval as soon as they could. The mechanic called around 4:45 pm to say they had just received verbal approval (7 days after the van had been brought in). I told them I had to leave town and that the rental car was parked by our home. We left for Fort Lauderdale (the other side of the state) at 2am to catch a very early flight out. The rental car sat where it was all week while I was away. The transmission was supposedly fixed sometime during that week and reinstalled on the vehicle. We flew back into town on Jan. 17th at midnight, drove back to Fort Myers and arrived home around 3am. After getting few hours shut eye, I had to turn around and go to the dealer to pick up the van, while my sister followed me to the rental company to drop off the rental, and then I took her to the airport to fly home. And it was my birthday too. But here's the clincher, when I took it back to the rental company I was advised that I owed over $500. Because the warranty only covered one day of rental. Can you believe that? They kept us waiting over a week, approved it as I was flying out of town, there were less than 40 miles driven while it was in my possession and we got hit with all those rental fees. That just isn't right.
