I signed for a car loan for my daughter. Due to a number of late payments she made, the matter was turned over to the Regional Adjustment Bureau. I received a notice dated August 1 that I was to pay $584.44, which was for the June and July payments of $159.02/mo., plus quite a bit of late fees.
I called RAB and set up a plan wherein $300 was to be taken out of my account on August 15th, and the balance of $284.44 taken on the 23rd.
I subsequently rec'd a letter from Fifth Third Bank that my August payment was past due and they were tacking on a late fee of $154.20, for a total of $313.22. I called them and indicated that I had paid the $284.44 on August 23; however it was apparently never taken out.
I called RAB to find out what happened, and they said that after I paid the $300, Fifth Third Bank took the account back, so that payment was never made, and that it was returned to RAB on 9/27 for collection, and that I should call Fifth Third Bank to get it straightened out.
I called Fifth Third Bank and they told me $313.22 was due b/c my August payment was never made. I explained to them what had happened and they said I needed to work it out with RAB as it was in collection. I explained RAB had referred me back to FTB.
I asked to speak to a supervisor because I was NOT going to be paying any more additional late charges because as far as I was concerned, I made the payment. He said why don't I just take it to a local branch; I live in Milwaukee and there are NO branches here.
I wanted to make the $284.44 payment, along with my September payment, as I had always paid by phone.
I was told that because it was in collection they were not authorized to accept the payment over the phone.
I then said I would just mail it to FTB, but again stated that I would not be paying any additional late fees, and that my check would be for $444.43 ($284.44 plus $160 for current payment). I have to wait til my daughter gives me the payment, so that is why is why it's usually a few days late (due on the 27th but have til the 5th of the following month)
I find this whole operation very, very shoddy. I did what I had to do; the error was on their part as far as I was concerned.
Thank you.
