Misleading Solicitation Letters misleading solicitation letters

My 86-yr old mother-in-law got a letter from Warranty Activation Headquarters. My wife read the letter and thought we actually had to act on it. It was VERY convincing.

The only problem is that she hasn't had a car in 3 years!

The title of the letter is: Vehicle Warranty Notice. It even has a Customer ID Number listed at the top of the letter. How can she have a customer id - she never, ever had any kind of vehicle warranty and never had any relationship with this company.

It goes on to say: "This is your notification that your vehicle warranty may have expired or is about to expire." And then later on: "This notification may be your last chance to extend your coverage." And then of course, they offer all kinds of discounts, etc.

This letter was crafted to intentionally mislead people into believing that some type of existing coverage will lapse unless they pay them money to extend. They try to sound official to make them think that they are the holders of their existing coverage. This is incredibly deceptive. I can't imagine that what they are doing is legal.

Somebody stop these scam artists!!!
