Ripoff check engine light overhaul sensor rebuild

Cottman tried to convince me that my Jeep transmission needed a complete overhaul based upon their free 21 point inspection. The tranny would not shift out of drive (limp home mode) and the check engine light was on. They gave me a $1200 plus parts estimate. I said I would take it elsewhere for a second opinion.

They gave me the inspection sheet. The tech had written down the check engine codes P0138, P1762, and P1764. I did a search and found that these codes meant the oxygen sensor was bad and that the transmission sensor and transmission governor needed replacement. Not that the whole tranny was shot.

The internet is full of information on this particular repair and it was very obvious that all that was wrong with this tranny was a common electrical component failure. I replaced the parts myself in less than an hour (never done it before) for less than $200 and the tranny is fine. Just drove it to Estes Park and back (1400 miles) up and down the mountains. My guess is Cottman, or at least this one, never saw a tranny that didn't need overhauling.
