I rent vehicles on a regular basis but have rarely saught to use "Avis" simply because of their idiotic non-sense rules/guidelines concerning "credit identification"
However, I made a reservation w/Avis online on June 21 for today July 15 on a 12 passenger van, one-way trip and had a confirmation number.
Once I arrived at this Avis, not only did the manager/owner NOT show a single sign of "customer service" simply by saying "Hello... How may I help you?" (he didn't) but also, after he confirmed my reservation, he asked for a credit card/driver's license which I provided.
My credit card (an accepted major-Visa card) is ALSO my debit, checking, ATM card all in one w/photo ID. The owner replied, you can only use this card to pay for the rental at the "end" of the trip, but NOT to secure the rental upfront. You have to have a seperate "major credit card" w/the required balance available on it.
This situation left my family and I completely stranded without other means to secure a similar 12 passenger van for one-way travel on today.
According to Avis's own rules/guidelines it states: Debit, Check or Cash Cards are not accepted as "credit identification". NOTHING in their policies/procedures states "a seperate major credit card" MUST be used to secure payment!
In fact, I PRESENTED the owner of Avis with a major credit (Visa/$0 balance) card as "credit identification" and further offered to pay for the rental fee's upfront and/or the payment could have been secured via my Bank Card (also a Visa) at the end of the rental.
This owner outirght refused to accept this, nor would he accept my sister's credit card over the phone stating "she wasn't there" and knowing full well this was a medical emergency since
I suffered a heart attack three days prior to today and needed to travel to my destination in order to seek further medical assistance.
I'd like to know, if according to the written policies/procedures an "Avis honored charge card" or "Avis cash pre-payment ID Card" is needed at the beginning of the rental for in THIER OWN WORDS "credit identification" then why was I NOT allowed to use such?
There is NOTHING that states in these policies you MUST secure "payment" with another major credit card! Avis left us high & dry and I will NEVER use their services again. Avis engages in deceptive business practices, probable descrimination and inadequate customer service.
This was a matter of life and death and they could have cared less!!
