My 82 year old Mother who drives only when necessary has a 2005 car with under 45,000 miles on it in perfect running condition, her warranty was lapse due to the years of ownership only. She took her car to get an annual smog check for registration purposes. She was being frugal and went to the nearest smog station near to where she lives. This happens to be Purrfect Auto. She lives on a fixed income and rarely has monies left over and the end of the month. As the story goes she took it to Purrfect auto and asked them to do a smog check. They agreed but requested and offered her an on the rack inspection. My mother agreed as part of the smog check. Shortly after, she waited for the smog to be completed inside of their waiting room when one of the mechanics called her to the vehicle and pointed out some transmission fluid on her pan and axle. They told her that if she did not replace both of the axles that they would break on the road and cause an accident and/or severe damages.
