Gaslite Inn
Ripoff restaurant and bar, God awful customer service and extremely rude

Around 7:00 P.M. On 7/20/04, we went to Gaslite Inn. We have never been there before, and thought it was worth a try. I ordered a strip steak and scrod dinner, and my husband ordered an eight ounce sirloin.

Most of the items on their menu was between $20 and $27 dollars. There was a few items between $12.95 and $15.95, but nothing cheaper. You expect for that kind of price, some class, good quality and great customer service (wrong!). I guess I should have known better when I only saw four other customers on the restaurant side.

She asked how we wanted our steaks done, we both said medium. Mine came out over-done and dry with all the flavor cooked out. My husbands came out rare. Also, he was supposed to get sirloin steak and I was supposed to get strip, but we both got strip steak.

My husband was only able to take one bite of his steak. The only seasoning put on it was garlic. He said it had absolutely no flavor, and told me he could not eat another bite. Also, he was not happy that he did not get what he actually ordered.

Our waitress came around when both of our mouths were full, to ask how everything was. She left after one split second, before I could even ask for A-1 sauce. I had to wait fifteen minutes for her to come around again, (she seemed to like sitting up at the bar with all her friends, and screwing around), to flag her down and ask for A-1. She seemed to cop a little of an attitude then, but her attitude would not come out completely until the end of our visit. The A-1 sauce did nothing to improve the flavor of my steak. It was too washed out to be saved.

I had already decided I was not going to make an issue out of my meal. The scrod, baked potato, and bread was acceptable. The salad was so-so, (they used ice-berg lettuce, only. Not what you expect for the price they are charging). My husband on the other had was going to say something.

We were both done eating for quite some time. We were doing nothing but sitting, waiting for a real long time. I even made the comment that if she did not get her butt off that bar stool, that we were just going to get up and leave. She finally came about five minutes later.

My husband told her that his steak was unacceptable. He told her it had no flavor, and tased "washed up" and that he could not eat it. She says: "What do you want me to do? If I say anything to the cook, he may through something at me". My husband told her to tell him that the steak was unacceptable. She stomped off.

She came back and said that she would have to charge us full price, and there was nothing she could do, since he ate part of the steak. I pointed to his steak, and said "Does it look like he ate the steak? She then, picked up the steak and stomped back to the cook. She came back later and said sorry, we have never had any complaints about the steak, and the cook said that you would still have to pay full price. (looks like we should have left when we were originally thought about it.)

I told her that that was wrong, that we should not have to pay for steak that is not edible, when the meat is possibly bad, and that I would make sure that everyone at the apartment knew about this, and everyone at work knew how we were treated. She said that they did not care. All they got in were regulars, anyway, and went on to say that we were lucky we were let in anyway, since my husband was wearing a tank top. For one, she needs to go back to school, because what my husband had on was not a tank top. It had a complet collar that went around his neck, and the shirt covered his shoulders, and his complete body. Also, that was the first restaurant I've ever come accross that had an issue with tank tops.

OK - do they ever stop to think why they only get "regulars", and no new customers? That would be a wake-up call to me if I were running a restaurant. Also, are they saying since we are not regulars, that we are not welcome in their restaurant? Do you have to be a member to be welcome there? Maybe they should put a sign out in front of their restaurant that says: "Not taking any new customers". Because, basically, that is what she just said. And that new customers are liars? We were making this up? We eat out a couple times a week, and we know what steak is supposed to taste like.

Any-way, she takes my credit card, and runs it. I sign it, and she says "What, no tip?" like she is actually surprised. When I receive crappy food and crappy nasty service, I tend to leave no tip. Any way, she leaves again with my credit card. Says she has to run it through another machine. She comes back later and says that she just had a taste of the same cut of steak (just indirectly admitted to bringing us the same cut, instead of one sirloin, and one strip), and tells me how good and juicy it was. It was obvious she never had eaten at Longhorn, Outback, Lonestar, Brown Derby, Harry's Steak House, or any of those places if she thought the steak was good. She must live a sheltered life if she thinks that steak was good.

I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy. We have never been treated this way, ever. We are both good, kind people who do not deserve to be treated badly. They obviously think they are better than us, but they are mean-spirited, rude people who are probably always as drunk as their customers at the bar. My husband and I will never eat at their place again. That is the worst experience we have ever had.
