I, too, received a phone call saying that they were calling about a credit card for which I had recently applied. The rep kept saying it was for a "Visa credit card" (in fact, he repeated that phrase about a half dozen times). Since I had applied online for a Visa from a rather reputable company & was told I would receive notice within 2 weeks, I didn't think anything of this— that is, until I visited USA Shopping Club's website and realized it was the wrong company!
I immediately sent a very firm (if not downright nasty) email telling them that they were not to deduct any money from my checking account, but when I stopped at an ATM to check my bank balance, I noticed a discrepancy of almost $80.
Since my bank is closed today, I tried to call the 800# for the shopping club, but got their answering machine. If they did deduct anything against my wishes, I guarantee that I will be contacting not only the Better Business Bureau, but also an attorney!
