My husband and I applied for a loan modification in November with M3 Legal Services. Ironically, they came highly recommended and we trusted the person who told us that they would do a good job. Being in the military, we are at the mercy of the housing market when we are transferred and need to find housing for our family. We were transferred to Florida at the height of the housing market and had no choice but to purchase a house with a large mortgage. The housing bubble burst while we were there and we were suddenly upside down on our mortgage and knew we would have to sell the house in the next 2 years when the Air Force transferred us again.
My husband deployed to Iraq shortly after our application and that left me to handle the endless requests for more paperwork, the lost documents, the unanswered phone calls and emails, and 5 changes of the person who was "personally handling our account".
After over a year, they simply stopped communciated with us all together. After 36 emails (I counted), I finally received a call from Leland Mogland himself (conveniently from a private number which didn't show on my caller ID). He apologized for the "poor business choices of his team" and said that he would "personally see to it that our refund would be sent by the end of the week". That was in July.in my world, a week is 7 days, but apparently in M3's world, a week is 506 days.
We were not asking for anything other than what they agreed to when they signed a legally binding document to refund a portion of our fee if they could not modify our loan. We upheld our end of the contract, yet they have somehow managed to escape any responsibility for their part.
As the wife of a man who has risked his life on 3 deployments in Iraq to defend freedom and the American Dream, it deeply saddens me that people like M3 make a mockery of that freedom and hide to prevent having to be accountable for their poor choices. How do they lay their heads on their pillows at night knowing full well all of the trusting people they have lied to and taken advantage of? Money is simply not worth the compromise of your character.
