Sandia Laboratory Credit Union Occupy the Banksters at Sandia Area Federal Credit Union

Sandia Area Federal Credit Union is supposed to be one of the heroic credit unions which so many people are flocking to because of the corruption in the banking system. Not so, in my experience.

I have been in the habit of religiously checking my balance every day (and sometimes two or three times a day) due to having had hundreds of dollars worth of fees in the guise of "NSF, " or nonsufficient funds, stolen from my Wells Fargo Bank account. This is exactly the reason I started an account with a local credit union, Sandia Area Federal Credit Union (SAFCU). I had planned to close my account at Wells Fargo to avoid being constantly robbed like this.

After opening an account at SAFCU, I began checking my balance every day to avoid overdrafts. I hve also applied for overdraft protection numerous times, but have been turned down continuously due to my lack of income. Recently, I checked my balance for the hundredth time this month. Everything appeared to be in the black, and being on social security disability and generally having nothing left after my rent and bills are paid, I am extra careful about every penny.

Thinking everything was fine, I paid what bills I knew I could pay. Yet, even with all of my extra caution, I became overdrawn. With this overdraft came a $29 fee. I thought I could easily take care of this fee with a deposit, but pretty soon another overdraft happened, and then another and another and another. Each of these overdrafts triggered another $29 fee, until the credit union was charging me over $200 in overdraft fees.

The banking system is in the habit of pilfering a customer's account no matter how hard that customer tries to cover the negative balance on an account, and there is absolutely no leeway nor a grace period for those of us who are desperately trying to keep ahead of all the expensive fees that are automatically added on for each and every overdraft.

I know that I have been unfairly robbed by this credit union, just as I was by Wells Fargo, and I believe I am entitled to a full refund of the money that has been pilfered from my meager checking account.

I believe the entire banking system is immoral and corrupt, and the owners and overlords of these financial institutions, even in these dire economic times (which they, in fact, created) continue to punish and rob economically challenged people like myself to support their own greed, excess, and lives of luxury. They are Grinches and Scrooges all year round without any mercy on their own struggling customers, and they should be held accountable and face the consequences of their misbegotten ways.
