On Friday, June 3, I was asked to deliver documents for a client of the firm I am employed by. I arrived at the address in New Castle Delaware that was provided to me and was told by a security guard there that that building was an operations center and that no visitors or deliveries were permitted there, and to go to the main bulding further along the road. At the next building I arrived at, I was told that Citicorp is not located in that building but is at another building nearby. I arrived there and was approached by an individual claiming to be with security and asking why I was I going to their buildings. I explained that I would have a delivery to make and I simply wanted to make sure I had the correct address. At that point I left.
I returned about an hour later when I had been provided with the name of a contact person who was to receive the delivery. As I was about to enter the building, I was approached by the same security guard who again asked what I was doing there, where I had been for the last hour, who I was going to see and many other questions. She went into the building and told me to wait outside. Several minutes later, I was approached by two men and the same female security guard who were asking a barrage of questions including who I was, why I was there, why did I arrive in a taxi, where was I from, who do I work for, what I was delivering and why and many other questions. While I was waiting they attempted to contact several people I work with. I did explain that in this particular situation, I was just acting as a messenger to deliver some documents and I really did not have much more information. None of the individuals at any time provided any identification nor credentials of any type, yet they were asking for mine while standing on the sidewalk outside of the building.
After a while they decided that they were going to escort me to their mailroom. At that point I had just heard from my office stating that I could now deliver the materials, and I would have been fine with delivering the materials to the mail room, when they then contacted the police. One of the attorneys whose instructions whose instructions I was following was befuddled by what was happening and she contacted Mr. Martin who hung up during the conversation.
I am a Citibank customer and I routinely visit many other financial institutions with similar last minute requests from clients and never have I had to undergo such scrutiny and such rude treatment.
