I received a phone call at my office from a woman who did not even identify herself saying Mr. Ball wanted her to call and notify my that they were going to garnish my wages. I was floored as I had no idea what she was talking about and therefore started asking questions.
She told me that I owed a debt from 1983 or 85 for a credit card with Bank of America and they had verified that this was my debt in the amount of $2300.00 with penalties and interest. I informed her that this was not my debt and asked for some verification at which point I was given my name with another last name (not mine) attached, the ssn was correct, but my date of birth and address were not.
I told her that this was not my bill and I needed them to fax me some sort of proof at which point I was told I needed to speak with Mr. Ball, she transferred me to this man who was so ugly, rude and threatening, it made my blood boil. He refused to send me any proof, insulted me when I said I needed to talk to my attorney before I did anything, said he had verified that this was my debt with my father (he used his name) back in 1992, which would be a miracle since he died in 1987.
He then said he would settle with me for $1000.00, I told him I would not pay anything without finding out what this debt was about, he became brash and ugly and told me he would just garnish my wages and hung up on me. They insisted that I received letters from them (which I had not) and had been served with papers regarding this matter (which I had not.) Ten minutes later they called back to verify my employment, it was at that time I had my co-worker get their information and of course tell them I was an independent contractor not on payroll, so they cannot garnish anything.
The matter had me quite upset so I decided to go online and investigate them. Using the phone number they had given, your site was the first to come up. What an enlightenment that was. I have since reproted them to the BBB, Attorney General and the FTC and am in the process of writing them threatening them with a law suit.
I cannot imagine how many unaware people they have managed to get money from, thank goodness I had saavy to know that no one can just demand money from you without proof.
