As an attempt to re-age an old credit card account Wright Patt Credit Union just flat out reported illegal and misleading information on my credit report. I had a Secured Credit Card with them opened in 1997 that went over the limit somehow due to a dispute with a car rental company in the year 2000. Wright Patt eventually closed this credit card in 2001 and reported it on my credit report which was fine.
In after not collecting on the Credit Card account they decided to open a separate collection account which also would have been fine. However, they opened this account as a Credit Card Account with Revolving Terms, High Balance, etc. To make it appear as if I had another Credit Card with them that they eventually charged off in 2004.
When contacting them, they admit that it's not a credit card account but a debt collection practice that they have been using for a long time. Not only are they knowingly reporting misleading information to the agencies, they are also in violation of Section 623 (a) (5) of the FCRA, which specifies that any entity that reports information to credit bureaus about a delinquent consumer account that has been placed for collection or written off must report the actual month and year the account first became delinquent (2000 in my case).in turn, this date is used by the credit bureaus to measure the maximum seven-year reporting period the FCRA mandates.
