Effectur
Abuse of financially vulnerable & inexperienced people

As a recent past client of Effectur, I can validate that the other complaints listed here are consistent with my experience.

Fortunately, I am financially sophisticated and therefore I was able to coach the people at Effectur so they did not permanently screw up my tax situation. But for the average person, this company would be a disaster. Several specific comments:

1. My case got passed to 3 or 4 different people, and no one who picked up the case had any clue about the issues I had spoken to the previous person about.

2. Effectur was all warm & fuzzy when I was just interviewing them. They talked about all the things they could do & the focus my case would get. After all, for $6,000, they would have to spend 20 hours to even get to $300 an hour — the same price I would pay a high powered tax lawyer. After I hired them, their focus disappeared.

3. At one point, I went 2 months without being able to get in touch with anyone. I finally forced my way (by phone) to talk to someone who had been assigned to my case. I found out the last person was no longer with the firm. I never got a phone call to tell me.

4. After telling me they would bill me over several months, corresponding to the work they would do on the case, they also then proceeded to charge me a financing fee of $100!

5. I will call out by name one person there - Melissa - who gave me advice and direction that was so outrageously bad, it would have made our ultimate case with the IRS even worse. My favorite quote was "You need to apply for a loan for the value of your house." Excuse me? Effectur repeatedly advised us to take out home equity loans - which was in general probably the right advice. But a loan for how much? The amount of the tax bill? Or the maximum amount we could get? Or what? This person advising us to do this lacked even a basic understanding of what she was telling us to do. I put myself in the position of someone who has no financial background - it would have been a nightmare and could have left us even MORE in debt that we were before, for no reason.

I am pursuing legal action against them and encourage others to do the same.
