I have been receiving calls from a man (perhaps several men) utilizing several names, mostly "David Marvin." He/they claimed to represent "Nationwide Grant, " a federal agency acting through Bank of America. They informed me that I had been selected to receive a $5000 grant for my stellar tax record. After sounding official enough that I gave them the information they desired (God, I'm an idiot), they called several future times for verification.
On one of these calls they requested I transfer $500 to a Western Union account in New Delhi to "verify that you are who you say you are." Once they requested this, I knew I had been scammed, and refused. On several future occasions they continued to ask if I had made the transfer, and I eventually tired of their shenanigans and asked that they never call me again.
They often used four-digit phone numbers such as 1014, but most of the calls have come from numbers with the 973 or 979 area codes, which correspond to parts of New Jersey and Texas, respectively.
