Customer Message from John Stumpf

I will only use keywords that John Stumpf used in his professionally written and drafted letter:

1."Welcome to the Wells Fargo family!"

2."we want to be able to provide you even more convenience, value and service than you've ever had before."

3."Our primary goal is to do what is right for our customers."

4."Today, it is business as usual for all Wells Fargo and Wachovia customers."

5."There are many more exciting developments to come that can provide you with even greater value and convenience."

6."It's important to us that we continue to work to earn your business and your trust."

7."Welcome to our family!"

His letter to his existing and new banking customers can be best described as an "oxymoron" - do you know what that means?

OXYMORON = "a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in cruel kindness or to make haste slowly.

OXYMORON = "A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist."

OXYMORON = "Rhetorical figure by which contradictory terms are conjoined so as to give point to the statement or expression; the word itself is an illustration of the thing. Now often used loosely to mean "contradiction in terms."

This is the content of his oxymoron letter:

Anyone who banks with wells fargo bank will experience the following "convenience, value, and service" bank fees:

1. Check card rewards annual fee - 12.50
2. Monthly service fee - 20.00
3. Morning express daily bal report - 20.00
4. Nsf return item fee - 35.00
5. Continuous od level 2 charges - 5.00
6. Monthly statement fee - i was told this is free - 10.00
7. Overdraft fee - 35.00
8. Phone banker call charges - 20.00

I spent over 1 hour on the phone arguing and demanding they refund me 14 NSF fees, and after carefully revieing my bank statement fee, i noticed other charges on my statement that were not supposed to be there. They credited my account a total of $55 in fees that i did not ask for or I was not supposed to be charged.

In regards to NSF Fees, it is real simple, or it is suppose to be simple, if you do not have money to cover a charge, they return the charge and charge your account a $35 monthly fee. I can accept this, as this is their STRICT rules they always enforce. Besides it is my fault, so i accept it.

What i do not accept is the following that took place to me:

1. I have $190 in my bank account.

2. I use my debit/check card to run 13 small transaction of $7 to $10 each totaling $125, so they were all approved because i had money to cover them.

3. Overnight, my car company hit my account my $335 car payment via pre-approved automatic transaction on Jan 5th when it was not supposed to hit my account until the 14th of the month.

4. I did not have money to cover the $335 car payment, but Wells fargo decides to change their rules and pay the $335 because they said they were helping me out, and then hit me with 13 total $35 NSF fees adding up to $400 because of the 13 small tiny Check card purchases I made the previous day.

I showed proof to the customer service person on the phone that previous transactions like my $189 T-Mobile bill got returned because i did not have money to cover that, and other transactions the previous 3 months, so why did they decide to change their rules and pay the $335 fee when it was clear i did not have money to cover that.

I actually got her to admit to me that they "use their discretion to pay or not pay transaction at their own discreation to help their banking customers." SO THEY ADMIT THAT THEY HAVE RULES AND POLICIES, BUT ONLY THEY CAN CHOOSE TO APPLY THE STRICT RULES OR IGNORE THEM WHEN THEY WANT TO.

And in this case, they chose to ignore the strict rules they applied to me several times the past month to pay this transaction so they could profit $400 in nsf fees from my bank account.

The customer service rep told me they do not do that and they are not after profit. But i told her that is exactly what happened isn't it?

If it looks like a duck, if it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, then it is a duck. And she was trying to make it out to be a dog or a cat, or a fox, when it is a duck. It is an oxymoron duck!

Do you see the "oxymoron" picture here!

Do you see the cruel kindness here?

In so many words, the wells fargo customer service rep admitted that they do use their discretion, they can break their rules anytime they choose where they see the $ profit that is in it for them, that they are guilty, but not responsible!

John Stumpf
