GE Money, Care Credit
Closed an account without notice because of Joint account holders personal bankruptcy

Ok here it goes...

A friend and I had a joint Care Credit account through GE Money. My friend filed for bankruptcy. We both spent a great deal of time talkting with his attorny and GE Money to make sure that my credit would not be affected by his bankruptcy. GE Money assured me that the only thing that would change with my account is that my firends name would come off the account and I would be solely responsible for all payments.

We all agreed.

Since the time the bankruptcy went out, I have stopped receiving all payment notices, etc. I tried logging onto my account and was "denied access." I called customer service who sent me over to the bankruptcy department.

Here is where I get totally screwed. The bankruptcy department told me that the account is CLOSED because of the bankruptcy and that it will show as a charge off on my credit. I explained to the lady on the phone that was not what was supposed to happen, and that this is ruining my credit. She tells me that "This is what happens when you have a joint account." I again explain that my firend and I aren't married, and that his name was supposed to come off of the account. That I was supposed to take over all payments and keep my credit standing. She says NO... That is not what is going to happen.

I give her the following senario.

Friend A and Friend B buy a car. Friend A files for bankruptcy. Friend B does not lose car, they take over payments.

She says that yes that is how it works... BUT not with GE Money bank. It is their policy to close the entire account and charge it off on all persons credit involved with the account. Are you kidding me? Here I am willing to pay, want to keep my credit privledges and they tell me tuff luck. Nothing you can do about it. How is this legal?
