I signed up with Gibson Trust, Inc.in June at the suggestion of a family member. I had significant credit card debt and needed help paying off the high balances. I had tried to get help from another non-profit organization but was told that since I was technically able to pay the minimum payments and had never been late on a payment, they couldnt help me. A family member had been in a similar circumstance and had had good results with Gibson Trust. I contacted Gibson Trust, Inc. And they stated they could help me.
From the beginning, every month it would take Gibson Trust over a month to get my money to creditors. I started receiving notices from creditors that they were not receiving payments from Gibson Trust, Inc. I started accumulating late fees on my accounts (when I had never had late fees before). When I would attempt to contact Gibson Trust, Inc., it took me multiple times to get through, no one would answer the phone, and no one would return my calls.
In September a staff person (possibly a former staff-person) of Gibson Trust, Inc., named James, who had obtained information from my file and called me at work, contacted me. James told me that Gibson Trust had merged with another company and that he would be handling my account. He instructed me to send my October payment via Western Union directly to him and made payable to him. A scammer within the scam!
Gibson Trust is still holding my initial payment, which they were to hold until my completion of the program, however I couldnt complete because they disappeared. For the 17 months that I was with Gibson Trust they negotiated very poor interest rates, there are at least two months that they received my money but did not pay creditors, and I have at least three months of late fees with creditors.
I am now in the process of doing what everyone else victimized by Gibson Trust is doing. I have sent a certified letter to Gibson Trust (well, their new identity, that is, Norstar), I have also contacted my creditors. I am filing a complaint to the Florida Division of Consumer Services at www.800helpfla.com the Dept. Of Banking and Finance at www.fightfraud.org.
If we all speak out about our cases, maybe we can get something done about this company.
