My original student loan amount was $18,000.00 for nursing school expense. After I graduated I was given a coupon book and told to pay the amount and in 10 years it would be paid off. I did as instructed and thought my loan was about to be paid off.in 2000 I went through a divorce and financial hardship and put my student loan on deferment. After the deferment time was up, I resumed payments and now, 13 years later I find out that I now owe $30,000.00! This is very stressful and has become a nightmare. They will not lower my interest rate or help me in any way other than offer me another deferment - which in turn will sky rocket my loan amount again! I desperately need help. There has got to be something illegal here. They are now threatening to garnish wages.
