As detailed in the book The Serpent on the Rock, Prudential knowingly and as part of official company policy sold extremely risky investments to people who needed very secure investments for retirement. Then Prudential set up a class action scam, so their victims were limited to getting about 2c on the dollar, for their investments. They fought investigators tooth and nail. They stole investor money, openly, for lengthy periods of time, and overpaid themselves high fees. The stink was so bad some other companies have reimbursed investors for investments gone sour, saying they wanted to avoid Prudential's reputation.
