Lost cash deposit

My wife deposited $5,000 in cash into our Wells Fargo savings account. She was given a depopsit slip which laid around for awhile and then was lost or discarded. We never realized how important it was because we just trusted that the deposit was safe. It was a BANK, for crying out loud!

A couple of months went by and we finally noticed that the amount in the savings account was shory - by $5K! We approached the bank and they said they would look for it. After a couple of weeks, it was "found" and correctly deposited to our account. What a scare!

Well, the next monthly statement came and we were again short the $5K! A phone call revealed that, in spite of our having been assured that it was found and corrected, it had been a mistake - the $5K they found belonged to someone else. This is not a comforting thought - not only were we again out our money, but apparently someone else also had had problems of some sort.

This happened in July of '07 and just today we were informed that the bank considered the issue closed and they were unable to locate our money. They basically said that without a deposit slip we were unable to do anything to them about it, but they were "very sorry." They refused to examine video of the tellers from around the time we thought the deposit was made and would not allow us to take our own time to view them. This was our best chance to find the money because I suspect that a teller somehow walked off with the deposit unless their internal tracking is woefully inadequate - or they really never tried to find it at all... How do we kow???

We are going to pursue this on the internet - I have found many others with the same complaint - and see if we can gather enough background to interest local media so they can alert the public about this issue.
