I have 4 accounts at 5th/3rd bank in order to easily transfer money into 3 of my childrens account for college expenses. I also had overdraft protection to avoid the large fees associated with an overdraft. My son's account was recently overdrawn $670 which was deducted from my account and $993 in overdraft fees which was also deducted from my account.
Trying to get relief from the charges I took time off work, went to one branch in the town I live, explained my situation and was told I would need to go to another branch to get the fees removed. I went to the other branch and was told the fees could not be removed because my son was wrong. I know my son was wrong and he will have to live with my consequences for his misbehavior and I don't need the bank to tell me how to raise my children.
One overdraft was a $3.50 debit card purchase and was charged a $33.00 fee along with a daily overdraft fee of $6.00. The little boy manager and the lovely female manager explained the bank has to charge a fee for the use of their money. That is nearly 1000% interest. A loan shark would have been cheaper.
Needless to say the mother who earns a 6 figure salary, the child who will be a doctor in May, the child who will be a pharmacist in 2 years and the child who will be a computer programmer in 3 years will no longer put a dime of their money in 5/3 bank. And once I tell my child who is a CPA this story, he will take his money out also.
