Wachovia dormant account fees

I had a Wachovia joint checking account with my ex-husband. After getting a divorce, the account was left with a $2.00 deposit. Because we were settleing bigger accounts, I forgot about the $2.00 I left in the account. Fast forward three years later... I get a letter from a collection agency stating I owe Wachovia $48.00. My first thought was fraud. The less-than-helpful customer service rep refused to tell me what the charge was for. Finally, I got a supervisor (with a nasty attitude) who finally told me I owed $48.00 in "dormant account fees" that were "charged off" by Wachovia and sold. When I asked if Wachovia ever notified me about the fees, she couldn't answer. When I asked for a copy of my original contract, she stated "go to the branch." When I asked how to settle the amount, she stated "call the collection agency." At this point I was furious, knowing that Wachovia had probably slapped my credit report with a charge-off, and that the collection agency probably had their own entry. All the nasty supervisor could verify was an address and a phone number I lived at 2 addresses ago. If the collection agency had my address, why didn't Wachovia? I feel their not notifying me was a scam. If I had known that $2.00 would have messed up my credit, I would have withdrawn it a long time ago! Actually, the real issue here is that Wachovia has ruined my credit with their own fees, and due to no fault of m own. Their less than cooperative customer service department is the worst I have ever dealt with.
