Thanks for ruining my Xmas NCO! I was floored when I received a letter from NCO on 12.22.07, dated 12.14.07, stating I owe nearly 15K on a BOGUS debt! Needless to say I've been in freak-out mode ever since. Thank god for the internet and sites like this one. I've spent pretty close to the same amount of time researching these guys as I would have spent at work! Nice vacation!!! Not! They state that the original creditor is Chase/Assignee of Provi whatever the hell that is. I have an account with Chase through Amazon in good standing. I called Chase bank and confirmed that. They have no record of the account given on the collection letter. Their letter doesn't state when the debt was incurred/against what purchases. I checked with the Transunion credit reporting agency and there isn't anything about this debt on my report. My credit history is flawless! Well, it use to be... NCO performed a credit check on me without my knowledge or consent (I believe this is illegal). Now my report shows their inquiry! I've been saving and sacrificing for years so I can retire in 09' and buy a house. These guys aren't going to get away with this! I'm not calling these clowns (my lawyer advised me not to and from my research, I've seen that is a waste of time with these guys), but I will be sending them a certified letter (return receipt) requesting debt validation. I have to do that within 30 days, but will they even respond? Will they remove the inquiry from my credit report? Needless to say, I'm not optimistic after reading literally hundreds of complaints about these guys. I've already filed complaints with the FTC, California Dept of Consumer affairs and Transunion. I will be filing complaints with AG's & BBB's of PA and CA as well as the other two credit reporting agencies. I'll get through this, but I fear many are intimidated into paying these bogus debts. Imagine your grandmother on a fixed income being conned into paying off a bogus debt! These guys are disgusting! They should be put out of business! They've already had to pay (er, settle - of course they accepted no responsibility) the PA AG 300K after an investigation of over 800 complaints were filed. And if that wasn't bad enough, the FTC nailed them for 1.5M (the largest ever!) for violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
