This is a true Scam. I received this from my parents who are both in their early 80's. I am so glad that we have the relationship that we do, that they share this kind of incoming mail and information with me so that I can look it over for them. The letter is so convincing and so is the check. I read the letter 3 times over and then "Googled" the contents of the letter. Ie, the company name and phone number and also called the number listed which had a bogus dial tone to it, which would not connect.
Please, please, please, if you happen to receive something like this and you know it is too good to be true, research it as much as possible. No one gives you anything for free.
There has to be reasoning behind anyone offering you a check of such caliber and if you know that you have not requested anything, nothing of such should be just dropped in the mail.
If you happen to have family members who are older and are targets of scam artist such as these people, please take the time out with them and have them let you know of any suspicious mailings or phone calls they may get. Speak to them just as you would children about the dangers that lurk out there as older adults.
