I have been a GreenDot cardholder for about two years now and had no complaint whatsoever. I simply ignored all warnings not to signup for the card or upgrade to its premier membership. All went well until Nov. A few days after my birthday, i sold my presents (they were things i already owned) and loaded the funds onto my GreenDot MasterCard (about $1400). I used my card at a restaurant and unknown to me, i had left it there. I had no other need to use my card until the following day after church service, to my surprise, the transaction was declined (was attempting to purchase a $300 item). I called the automated banking system and it said i had about $49 left. Furiously, i proceeded through the options to speak to someone. The rep informed me that my card was used over 20miles from where i lived for transactions up to about $1300. The irresponsible bank told me to contact the merchants and ask them not to collect the funds. Without further delay, i hurriedly called both merchants and filed a corporate claim with them, they referred me back to my bank (like anyone else would) and tell them they should be filing the dispute, not me. They also said if the signatures don't match, they'll have no choice but release the funds. I did just that. The rep told me to wait a few days and the funds should not be collected because it was still pending. Again, i did just that. On the third day, my funds were not in my account so i called them again. This time, i was told to send a dispute letter with my name, account number etc. I did that too. They received the letter (per one of their agents) on the 19th of Nov and i called them everyday but they kept saying the letter was received, someone is handling the case well and i should get my funds back on Dec 4th. Burning with anger, i patiently waited till the 4th of December, calling them every other day but heard the same thing "your funds should be available to you Dec 4th". On Dec 4th, i called and heard an entirely different tune, this time, they claimed someone from that department (Dispute) should contact me the next day. I went off, they transferred me to the Lost Card department - they said all they do is block cards (which i did the day i discovered my card was lost), they transferred me back to Customer Service, i was promised a supervisor would call me but no one did. Two days later, i called GreenDot and heard the same thing. After yelling and expressing my pain/anger, i asked the rep, "Am I responsible for charges placed on my card when i lose it?", his response was "Yes, Sir". At that point i lost it even more. I pointed out to him that their website says something different and that if a life depended on that money, it'll be lost by now. I'm still waiting to hear from a supervisor and get my funds back. GreenDot can be useful to some, but no one is above mistakes, you lose things sometimes but i pray whoever uses GreenDot will not lose their cards (if they have funds on there) because they may never give you your money back.
