I had to settle a SBC debt back in Feb before I could purchase my house. RMA Risk Management Alternatives had the account at that time. I called them on 2/9 and settled the debt over the phone using a credit card. It showed on the next credit card statement the amount that I settled with them. Things were settled and that was that.
Then, I started receiving calls and letters from a different debt collector for the same debt. I disputed this and that was the last I heard from them. I even received a letter stating that this was taken off of my credit report because the dispute was right. Now, I have been receiving phone calls again from different debt collector for this exact same debt. I've unsuccessfully tried to call this new debt collector (everytime I call I receive a message to call back during regular business hours).
So, I just called RMA Risk Management Alternatives a few minutes ago. The guy I talked to first said that they do not show a settlement payment ever received. Good thing I keep records with names, dates, and times. I told him that I am looking at the credit card statement that shows when my payment went through and for the amount that it was settled for. I also told him the names of the women that I talked to and the name of the woman that accepted the settlement over the phone. He kind of stuttered a bit and then he said that he would have to get his supervisor to call me back because he has never had a case like this come up. I had to give him updated phone information because he never verified my address or phone number. I thought that this was strange.
Another thing that I found to be really strange was when
I called, this guy answered the phone by saying hello, not whatever the name of the business is called now. I tried calling the number back to tell him the exact day that the payment posted on the credit card statement but I cannot get anyone to answer.
What do I need to do? Should I get an attorney to help me with this. What legal actions can I take?
