Collecting from a debt 14 years old? Ripoff

My mother-in-law received a call from these guys a couple of days ago, trying to get a hold of my wife. She contacted them and was told it was a debt that they had purchased from Fingerhut back in 1993 for 326.77 and that the conversation was being recorded. The person she talked to wanted her address to send her a notice, but my wife informed the person that the debt was paid. She was then asked if we had any records, which we have nothing of from 14 years ago. My wife told them she would have to see what we had and get back to them.
We had paid off Fingerhut back in '93 or '94, but still had some collection agency contact us back then as well and try to collect. We eventually told them that the debt had been resolved and that they needed to get in touch with Fingerhut. Now fourteen years later it's back.
We contacted Fingerhut and was told that they were bought out back in 2003 and that they were under new management and had no record of my wife's name at all.
Nothing was ever reported to any of the credit bureaus, probably because they don't have her social, so my questions are:

Can these guys collect on something from 14 years ago? And how do I go about disputing this with really no proof that we paid it. I also tried to look up collection agencies that are licensed in the state of Utah and could find nothing for Asset Acceptance. Isn't there some kind of statute of limitations on this?
Any advice and words of wisdom would be much appreciated.
