This is unbelieveable, but true!
On Saturday, I took a look in our mailbox to check for our mail.instead of mail I found a handwritten note, with my name, address, the name Karen Fuller and 1-866- written on it.
Well, not knowing who the heck this was and curious as to why this note was left in our mailbox, I called the number to find out it was Cambece Law Offices. Obviously no one was in the office, since it was a Saturday morning.
Well, they apparently have a very sharp caller ID system, and called me this morning. We got Vonage several months ago with an unlisted number, ending the harrassing phone calls and it has been very peaceful ever since.
When they called, the woman refused to give me any information as to who they were and why they were calling, unless I verified who I was with previous addresses and other personal info. I told her that I am not comfortable giving out to ANYONE over the telephone. The woman hung up on me, because I refused to reveal any information about myself other than my name.
Well, I called back, an unidentified man answered, immediately knew it was me, told me that I was being recorded (like that is supposed to scare me or something, duh) and revealed information about me regarding my last 2 addresses, my maiden name etc. I told him to cut to the chase and tell my why they came to my home and what they wanted. I had no idea what was going on and thought it was something serious, for them to make a house call.
He said they didn't come to my house and the note was left by a neighbor. He said they were calling regarding an old credit card acct. I had. As a point of interest... I am totally unable to pay anything on this debt right now, as it is VERY financially impossible for our family at this point.
I ended up hanging up the phone on the jerk because I am still in disbelief that these people are doing 1 of 2 things...
They are either going to people's homes in attempt to collect debt, or are calling and harassing people's neighbors and having them leave notes in mailboxes. There are only 2 neighbors that I know well enough for them to know my name and last name. They were away this weekend and would have given me the note in person or told me in person if someone was looking for me. So, who knows.
Unbelievable!
I don't think it's unreasonable, for me to be concerned about this... I have small children and do not need these people coming around harassing us, or our neighbors over an old credit card debt.
It also concerns me that they refused to tell me who they were and why they were looking for me.initially I thought I was being sued and had no clue what for... There wasn't any reason that I could think of for a "law office" to be contacting me.
Does anybody know if these "practices" are legal and what can I do about it?
