My husband read in one of the local classified newspapers an ad that guaranteed $50,000 government grant. He called for more information and ended up giving them his checking account number and telling them they could issue an electronic check for $179 for check # 1032. When he told me that evening what he had done, I and a friend told him that it would be best to stop payment on that check. Most offers like that are probably not legitimate. We immediately went to the bank and stopped payment on check #1032 for the amount of $179.
However, 3 days later we received an overdraft in the mail. When we went to the bank, we found that the company had changed this from an electronic check to an automatic draft. The bank told us that companies do that to get around the stop payments. The company also changed the check from a total of $179 to two separate amounts of $20 and $159 to also make the amount not match our stop payment. This is another measure the bank said companies do to bypass a stop payment. We were lucky. I called our attorneys who told us this is at least the 6th case they are dealing with here in the state of Missouri and they would start working on it.
In the meantime—our bank, because we had issued a stop payment, and the company bypassed that, did return the money to our account. I searched and that particular company name seems difficult to find on the internet. However, I found another company name at that exact same address and suite number in Las Vegas called XTREME BUSINESS SOLUTIONS. When I tried to call customer service number of 702-264-0895, there is always a recording. When I called the 800 number back, they were rude and asked if I was sure I even had the right number. I responded that I must have since it came directly from them. Ours has been resolved. We have our money back. Just everyone else beware... Since a stop payment can even be gotten around by some companies.
