I reviewed a copy of my credit report today and found a negative report from Sherman Acquisition stating that I owe $585 to Compu Credit (Mastercard) that was issued in Feb. 2001. I have never received a collection notice.
I stated to the gentleman on the customer service line that I have never owned a mastercard. He then advised that I needed to fax over a copy of my Driver's License, SS Card, and need me to right my signature 3 times, have them notorized, and fax them to his company. I told him that I would not do any such thing until he proved that this debt belonged to me.
He advised that he could not provide me with that information. I asked if he could provide me with a copy of the application, etc. Showing where I signed up for this card, he advised that this debt was purchased from the company and didn't have any contact information for the original creditor.
He then tried to tell me that if the above information wasn't provided within 30 days I would be responsible for this debt. I have never even owned a Mastercard and haven't had a credit card since 2000.
Please explain to me how a company can claim that you owe them money, but can not provide you with documenation showing that you owe it. But at the same time request that I send over my most personal information so they can determine if it is valid and then send me notification without proof. I might be a blonde but I am not that stupid.
To me, if I signed the contract, I should be able to get a copy of the contract. They can't even give me that, let alone information regarding the company that issued the line of credit.
If anyone can help me out on this, or enlighten me to something I don't know, please do so.
