Direct Merchants Bank
Ripoff - you will owe these people for ever

Several years ago I got an Direct Merchants MasterCard. I paid my payments on time every-month. My balance reached my credit limit and all of the sudden I was getting over the limit fees and late fees. These people were calling me everyday at work and at home. I would make a payment over the phone and when I would get my next months statement I was still over the limit and there were more charges for late and over limit. I continued to make monthly payments on time and still more fees were charged. Then my husband and I separated and I fell behind on my payments. I was constantly hounded by them on a daily basis. I would talk to someone and they would note my account and I would make a payment and low and behold not 24 hrs later I was getting another phone call from a different person and they would say they had no record of my payment arrangements. Then I find on my statement they are charging me 30% interst on my balance which by now is well over my $4000 credit limit because of their fees. Finally, I got a letter from them stating that my account was now closed. Which didn't upset me but, I knew they would continue to harass me. I then had to request they stop calling me at home and at work and that if they wanted to contact me it would have to be by mail only. That worked for awhile I continued making payments which never even covered the fees they were charging. Then I got a letter from an attorney in my home state stating that I now owed them over $7,000.00 and that they were going to sue. I called the attorney and made payment arrangements with them and made my payments as agreed. Now, I have lost my job and have been unable to find work. Even though I lost my job I struggled to keep up my payments. I sent their attorney a letter stating my situation and that I could pay half of the payment and that as soon as I returned to work I would then resume paying the full payment. They agreed to this and then on 2/28/02 I get a summons from the sherrifs office and they are now suing me. I thought there was some knid of law stating that if you were making attempts to pay a debt they couldn't sue you. I guess not, cause that is where Im at now. My credit has been ruined by these people and now Im going to be sued by them. I answered their summons and again made payment arrangements. Then on 3/02/02 I get a letter stating they are accepting my payments but still intend to issue a judgement against me. My only advise to others is BEWARE of DIRECT MERCHANTS BANK!!!
