Merchants Credit Guide Company sent me a collection letter saying pay within 10 days and only pay half of the balance you owe. I have spent the last 5 years digging myself out of debt and found that if they will let you do that you should.
However, I thought I was paying on an overdue phone bill. When the phone company called me reguarding my bill I told them I paid the collection company. They hadn't even sent my bill to collections.
I called Merchants Credit Guide Company, not to be confused with Merchants Credit in Washington who is a good company and helped me track down MCGC, they said that it was a cable bill from 1995.
I called the cable company, which MCGC also told me got sold & it didn't, and they had no record of me ever having an account with them.
I called Merchants Credit Guide back they said "Are you looking for a refund?" I replied, "Just trying to figure out who I paid off."
They proceeded to transfer me around the system of managers until one was fed up with me calling and he said, "The cable company wouldn't have a record of my account because Sherman bought it. And why did you pay a bill you didn't know what it was for?"
He never could explain who Sherman was or how to contact him. I told him phone and cable companies keep their record still because if I didn't pay them once they wouldn't give me service again and I have no record of ever doing business with them.
Granted its only $165 but that is a lot for someone already trying to pull themselves out of debt that's a big amount. Read Your Bills!!!
