Collection Notice for About $70 a Year After Cancelling Service

I cancelled my AT&T service a year ago. The woman from AT&T told me I had a few days til my contract was up and that she would put a note in computer to cancel it then. Things went fine and she did, and I believe I paid the last phone bill because I never received another one.
It is now a year later and a few days ago I received mail from Palisades saying I owed AT&T 70 some dollars. If I owed this why had I not received anything from AT&T. I saw all the reports on the rip off and have only contacted Palisades once and left message. I am afraid they will ruin my credit for a phantom 70 dollar bill. I do not know what to do to prevent this from happening. I heard I should not call anyone. Can someone tell me what to do?
