I opened my Cap One account about two years ago. My husband also has one, and both accounts recieved late fees before the dates on billing statements said that late fees would be accrued. Because of this problem, i closed my card, because i had opened it to develop good credit and they were charging exhorbitant fees for very small purchases. To their specifications of closing the account, i paid the balance to bring the account to zero and requested the close.
The next statement came and it reflected the payment, but there was a $7 charge for some member fee, and then six months later its up to $150 balance, for charges and late fees. Now, a year later, its 300. I have not made any purchases and i can't, and yet no one is able to help me on this balance. They keep telling me that these are charges that i made, even though the account has been frozen for a year and all of the balance is from fees and late charges.
How do i fight this? I'd pay off the balance if they would settle for the actual charges, but they won't. I don't even know where to get a lawyer. This has been a nightmare. I have a good friend who worked for their collections, so i know that the the workers really have nothing to do with it. Any advice would be good. I'm trying to fix my credit and i believe in paying what i owe. I need help.
