Free HD offer denied before instaliation - Awful Customer Service

We decided to switch from the Dish to DirectTV because of a promotional offer through AT&T. My wife signed up for basic service with DVR service, no HD. After initially signing up, I saw that DirectTV was offering free HD receiver for new customers. I told my wife to tell the installer that we wanted to upgrade to HD when he came to install the DirectTV. Upon arrival, my wife informed the installer that we decided that we wanted to upgrade to HD. He responded that it would cost $200 for HD receiver. Confused by the $200 fee, she passed on the HD. The installer then took 5 hours to set up the DirectTV service, had my wife sign the contract stating that she was satisfied with the DirectTV service before the receiver was finished uploading the signal. After the Signal was uploaded, the picture looked awful on our wide screen HDTV.

After I learned of the added cost of the HD service, I called DirectTV and complained and they said that the installer was only a contractor and did not work for DirectTV and we should have called them for the upgrade. They wanted $200 for HD receiver since we called after installation and we signed the contract.
I called AT&T to complain, because they sold us the DirectTV service, they informed us that we had a 2 week window to cancel service.
I called DirectTV back and they said that AT&T was incorrect and I only had 48 hours to cancel service.By this time, a little over 50 hours had passed since installation.
I am now stuck with a TV picture that is worse than I had with the DISH.
DirectTV does not care about my point that we asked for the free HD receiver before installation, because it was with the installer.

Why should they, they have me under a 2 year contract that would cost $480 to cancel service.

AT&T telling me that I had 2 Weeks to cancel service when I really had 48 hours.
DirectTV has poor TV picture, poor customer service and I tell everyone I can to avoid DirectTV.
