In 2001 we moved, and our furniture was severely damaged by the movers. After almost 18 months, Allstate paid $3,400. In 12/03, heavy rains blew water into our attic. We reported a claim, but it turned out to be less than our deductible.
The same thing happened in Jan 04 in a different spot. Allstate paid approximately $350. My wife lost a small diamond, and the cost to repair and replace the diamond was $172 (we had a separate jewelry rider policy).
We have paid $1,000 to $2,000 a year for 17 years as an Allstate insured, and now we are cancelled for frequency of claims.
Lesson learned: do not report a claim if it might be less than $1,500. I cannot get insurance now. I have called 20 insurance agents and no one will touch me. We thought that was what insurance was for. Guess not. Our agent or adjuster should have advised us. Before you report a claim, ask your agent how it will affect your insurance.
