Loan Balance Grew From 5000 to 9000 Dollars at 25.98 Percent Interest

I took out a loan for $5000. I've been paying the loan on time. Recently I went in to discuss the status of the loan. Come to find out I'm paying 25.98% in interest and because of this, my loan went from $5000 to $9000. I've been paying on the loan for a year and when they showed me the loan paperwork it didn't even look like I paid anything on it. I'm beside myself. I feel like I'm stuck in a mud pit and can't get out.
