During my own mortagage crisis I had the rare opportunity of checking into the APEX at South Shore Lake Tahoe, Ca. At first sight and my first impression was favorable, a small out of the way place for some rest and relaxation. How not true. The family who claims to own the motel is from India and during my stay there I witnessed cash being paid under the table to houskeepers and maintainance people.in my case I had paid them cash and was asked to pay on a weekly basis. It started out as high as 400 a week untill I informed them of what motel 6 rates were. The room I was given was
sufficient yet one a weekly basis the toilet over flowed. The owner? Blamed me. Heck of a way to treat a cash paying customer in hard times. I spoke with a few people about this place and had been informed that they probably were pocketing the room tax, if you are a guest in a motel more than 30 days then there should be no charge for room tax. (my receipts do not reflect this) each week she carefully added on the tax to the total amount. The entire stay there I never witnessed the wife ever even so much as pick up a roll of toilet paper. Made him clean the rooms on days that the scabber housekeepers or their hubbys didn't show. I am now very doubtful about proper reporting of income and tax to the fanchise tax board or lacal gov.
