I recived a citation recently from the Illinois Tollway from a traffic violation that occured over seven (7) months ago. For those out of state drivers unfamiliar with the tollway system in Illinois, it is quite easy to become intraped in the Illinois Tollway's I-Pass lane especially when vehicles are travling multiple lanes at high speeds during rush hour traffic. To avoid an inevitable accident I admitidly incurred the infractions. Their system does offer fine waver if paid within seven (7) days. However, an investigation into thier system shows that computer generated fines are, as in my case, not sent until many months after the infraction thus ensuring that the Illinois Tollway extorts grossly high revenue. Being unable to pay a couple dollars in tolls cost me over $100. I paid this extortion knowing full well that failing to do so would ultimately ruin my credit rating. I was iin fact informed by an Illinois Tollway representative that I had no choice but to pay this grossly inflated fine becuase I had not paid it within 7 days.
