My son and I booked a 2 hour class with Newport Surf School at the cost of $250. Basically the method of instruction was to put us in the water with boards without leashes and told to just "pop-up" without any real instruction or demonstrations. We were not taught any ettiquette and at one point I was all most hit by another surfer, and it was probably because I was doing something wrong. Since Matt was no where to be found I wouldn't know. When I expressed my frustration in regards to the lack of instruction Matt just said "Let's not go there this morning" and it will just take you a while. So, for $250 I got the rental of two surf boards and we were on our own. Since there is NO instruction, THIS IS NOT A SURFING SCHOOL. After the lesson Matt sent me a fairly nasty e-mail, I have posted the string below to demonstrate his unprofessionism and his rudeness. Start at the bottom to read in order, though first one below is the "over the top" rude one.

It's obvious that You are a very upset, whinny, complainy person who has to complain about everything in Your life! You even complained about being there too early and having to wait till eight! Throw Your tantrums at another person like Your poor family! To insult My teaching only shows Your complete inability to show respect for others and people in general. Go and take out Your uncontrollable anger and resentments on others who are more willing to take Your crap! Your an ungrateful spiteful woman who just loves to give crap to people who think that they are going to take it! I'm not going to for one minute! I am the best instructor around here and always get very good responses, but once a year I encounter a psycho that will turn the facts around and give a response like You did! I SHOWED YOU ON THE BEACH WHAT YOU WERE DOING WRONG AN TRIED TO CORRECT YOU. You acted like a little child who was acting like You were two years old with an inability to take MY ADVICE! Well I am correct with Your slanderous E-mail and response to add insult to injury! Stay in Colorado, California will be a better place with out folk's like You bringing negativity! —

It was a great day and I had fun surfing. I was NOT frustrated at my learning curve, I was frustrated that you were not teaching me. I paid a lot of money for instruction, not to have you spend most of the time telling me what I would learn in your 4 day course. What I wanted was for you to teach me something in your one day course. It is not useful nor is it teaching to say "just pop up" and "it may take you a long time". It may have been useful for you to have actually watched me and maybe even taken me back to shore to demonstrate what I was doing wrong and then show me what I should be doing. And your response to me telling you that I was pissed at your lack of teaching was not constructive. All you said was "let's not go there this morning". When else should I have gone there? It was your opportunity to try and make a correction, and help me learn. I would have done just as well by renting a board without instruction. Also, reading your testimonies does not change my experience. So, in no way do I think that I got $250 worth of instruction. I have read websites that have more instruction then you gave.

Hi Melanie, Thanks & what a gorgeous day! I had fun teaching You Guy's how to surf today. You were frustrated learning the pop up and standing up on the board. It takes some a little longer to "Get It" down so be PATIENT. You said I pissed You off that I was not teaching You how to surf and stand up. All of My Students who go through My surf school are completely satisfied after each and every lesson and never are they pissed off at Me.
