World Moving Services
Rip-off! Fort Lauderdale

World Moving Services made moving my elderly mother from one state to another, a total nightmare. The dispatcher called the day before the move was to occur and I got the name of the provider, contact and phone number of the provider, which was a moving company out of Michigan called Modern Moving and Storage. You can see complaints about them at various websites.

The day of the pack out was scheduled for Sept. 2nd. At about noon El Paso time the driver had not shown or called which the dispatcher had said he would do. I called Modern Moving and asked if they could tell me when the driver would arrive. The contact indicated that the driver was coming from San Antonio but that he had not been able to contact him but that he would have the driver call me when he was able to reach him. I asked if the driver was traveling with a packing crew and he said "no." I said, "you do realize this is suppose to be a pack out, right?" He said, "let me look." Then he said, "oh yeah, you do have a pack out with this. Well the driver will just have to figure it out when he gets there." I said, "what do you mean?" He said, "he'll get a crew and pack you out when he gets there."

I proceeded to call World Moving Services to get this straighten out. I spoke to a customer service representative who continually said the driver would be there and I reminded her that today (Sept. 2nd) was the pack out day and the loading was tomorrow (Sept. 3) and she responded by saying that those were only "estimated" days. I promptly responded by saying we had non-refundable airline tickets and that those were the dates guaranteed for the move. I also advised her that I had made over 20 moves in the last 25 years so I knew what it would take to get this all packed and not having the packing crew there when promised would definitely cause a loading delay.

I asked to speak to a supervisor and this person refused to give the supervisor or her name. She stated that the supervisor would say the same thing as she was the one who had trained her. I continued to insist that she let me speak to her supervisor but she refused yet finally told me the name (first name only, would not reveal the last name). This took an hour. I kept asking what was the procedure should the driver not show and she continued to insist that he would show.

She even alluded that if the driver appeared very late that it would then be my decision to allow him in to pack. I asked, "You mean to tell me that if the driver shows up at two in the morning, I'm suppose to let him in to pack?" She responded that it would be my decision. I responded "that is unacceptable and give me your supervisor." Yet again she refused to give me her supervisor. The driver did not show and we had no idea if he would come the next day.

My husband called and was able to talk with a supervisor who finally promised to call by nine o'clock the next morning to resolve this issue if the driver had not appeared by then. My husband asked to speak to the owner and he got one name Collette, (no last name) and he was continually put into her voicemail when called to talk with her. She never responded to any voicemail. The supervisor did not call back by nine (11 o'clock Florida time) so my husband called. She indicated that she was still trying to reach the provider in Michigan and would call back.

In the meantime my husband called and spoke with the supposed owner of Modern Moving explaining the problem and he said that World Moving Services had not informed them of the details of the move (which I knew to be untrue since his associate had admitted that he did have the information in front of him when I spoke to him the day before). Then there was a series of back and forth phone calls and in the meantime the clock is ticking. World Moving Services suggested that the driver get day labor to help him pack our goods when we had paid for professional packers at professional packers' rates!

Finally at around 5PM the driver shows. He comes in, packs two china packs and leaves for the day. He comes back on Sept. 4th (he was suppose to have packed up and loaded by no later than the 3rd) to finish packing and loading. He is packing alone, by himself. We packed most of the unbreakable goods because we knew he would never get it all done otherwise. This was the day that we were to get the rest of the details done with the realtor as we were arranging to sell my mother's house. We were to fly home the next day.

The driver calls his packing helper at around 1 PM (he was not a professional packer either) and they finished packing the truck by around 4:15PM. We were unable to conduct our business because of this. The move is not over yet.

World Moving Service did nothing effective to resolve these problems and was totally uncooperative. They expressed no concern and provided poor lip service at best in trying to resolve these business issues (both World Moving Services and Modern Moving and Storage were blaming each other for this mess).

We have contacted a consumer advocate lawyer and are writing a letter to the federal government and Better Business Bureau in both Florida and Michigan. I would recommend that anyone else who has had this sort of problem with World Moving Services and Modern Moving do the same. Legal action is all that these sort of disreputable business operations understand.
