(Moving Company) No one picks up toll-free #, fax, refused to refund deposit made over the phone within 5 hrs

I received a call from Continental Van Lines in the early after noon by John. He quickly quoted me a price for moving from IL to CA. He then stayed on the phone with me as I spoke with someone else as I paid a $700 deposit. He emailed me the full contract and asked that I faxed it and call him when I was done.

I received the contract and attempted to fax it but there was no answer. I tried to fax it again a few hours later. No answer. I began calling the companies toll-free number and no one answered. There was never a prompt for John's extension or voice mail. The phone just rang. Finally, I scrolled through my call log and called the number John called from. A man answered and I told him what transpired. He said IT just walked in the building. He then gave the phone to the manager, Alec.

I told Alec my situation and he was quite rude. I told him I would like a refund for the $700 deposit (the contract says you have five days for a refund). He said "I don't give refunds" but that he would take off $50 for my entire moving costs to take my "family to dinner."

He took absolutely no blame. He blamed the telephone company, the computers, and even discussed how much square footage the company has (not sure where that come from). I do not feel safe with my belongings in the hands of Continental Van Lines. The people I spoke with were incompetent and rude.
