I purchased a new chest freezer to replace an old one that we had used for 15 years and was acting like it wanted to give up. We followed the installation instructions and waited for the new freezer to freeze. Since this was the first new freezer we had ever purchased, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I transferred the food from the old freezer to the new one, and we disposed of the old one. The new one seemed slow to freeze, but I thought that might just be my anxiety. After a week, obviously everything had thawed out! When the store sent a repairman out, he said that it appeared to be low on freon, and he recharged it, and said that it appeared to be working. When I checked on it 3 hours later, it was sweating and there was no new frost.
Whirlpool's warranty says that they do not cover lost food, but I didn't lose my food b/c of anything we did, but rather what they did not! They did not weld, solder, or whatever, so that the unit would not lose freon. They don't care that it's their fault or that we live on social security and it was already a big expense to get a new freezer, much less to replace the food they caused to thaw and ruin. "I'm sorry, M'am, there's nothing we can do, " doesn't sound much like a company that cares about quality or customer service. I'm not trying to rip them off, but they certainly did rip us off!
Don't buy a Whirlpool chest freezer unless the store where you buy it tries it out first, and then I'd think twice about it. I won't buy anything ever again with Whirlpool attached to it!
