After reading other's consumer complaintss on MCI, I decided that I too must share my story.
It all started in June/ July when I received a bill from MCI for $7.64. First of all, the bill that I received was from a phone number that I had YEARS ago! Second of all, I don't even call long distance, my entire family lives 10-20 minutes away. I am not even sure how I got set up with them.
I made multiple phone calls to MCI and each time the CSR that I spoke to assured me that my account would be closed and a credit would be issued. Well, on August 30 I received a COLLECTION NOTICE stating that my cancelled account has an outstanding balance and was going to be assessed an additional 35% collection agency fee. ALL THIS OVER $7.64.
So, for fear of a negative entry on my credit report, I paid them their big $7.64. I also called them once again to let them know how disatisfied I was with the way that they were handling things and the lady that I spoke to told me that since the company was in the process of filing bankruptcy, that no credits would be issued at that time.
Well, wouldn't you know it on October 16 I received a letter from MCI stating that my "account" (which I never had to begin with) had been credited $7.64. Then on December 3 I received ANOTHER bill (with a different phone number and account number) for $3.62. After calling and complaining once again, I received another letter on December 12 stating that they had credited my account $3.62; I also received a second letter the same day stating that they had credited my account $10.00. I cannot remember for sure, but I think that was their way of saying "Oops, we screwed up; here's ten bucks." If I remember correctly I think they cut me a check for the $10.00 and mailed it to me.
I'm not sure if they have gotten things straightened out now, but it was sure a mess for me when they were going through their bankruptcy.
