Unethical Treatment of Employees

A Document of My Experience with how Giant Eagle Manages Ethics Complaints / Treatment of Employees: It gets even better as you read about how they handled the situation / deal with complaints

11/12 Worked with floater pharmacist had never worked with before. Put all drugs and prescriptions away. All scripts were filed to the best of my knowledge; the technician Michelle Lewis had been working on them from about 8:00 pm 10:00 pm. Everything seemed to be in order, left store as it looks every night about 10:20 P.M. Pharmacist said she was going to stay a bit later. Michelle Lewis (technician) and myself left.
11/13 Accused and emotionally abused for unknown shortcomings of night before with floater pharmacist by regular store pharmacist Michelle Lyn Jackson at 10:00 A.M. Anger was so severe the pharmacist was physically shaking and coming towards me when yelling. (for more information about the actual incident please refer to Case ID 330110 on myHRconnection). About 10:30 A.M. Broke down and started crying because incident at 10:00 A.M. Which was severely hindering work atmosphere and flow. 11:00 A.M. Spoke with a general store manager, Mr. Amodeo, in personnel office about the incident and inability to work with the pharmacist. Visually obvious I was too upset/distraught to work rest of day with that pharmacist. Discussed store transfer with general manager. He said he did not see a problem with this, and said he would have someone in charge of store transfers contact me. About 11:30 A.M. Left Giant Eagle Pharmacy, Store 004, in Bethel Park, PA due to still being visibly and emotionally unnerved from 10:00 A.M. Experience. 11/16 Published case 330110 on My HR Connection concerning 11/13 incident and discussion on immediate store transfer with store manager Mr. Amodeo. Had yet to hear back from anyone about store transfer as he had said would happen. Also received phone call from unknown number that day from a coworker at Store 004 asking about the whereabouts of a missing patient insurance card from 11/12. I informed her truthfully I did not process that prescription either, and therefore would be unaware and not responsible for any missing insurance card. Case 330110

— Sent 11/16 Hi, I'm a fifth year PharmD. Candidate in Pittsburgh, PA. I have been with your company for about 1.5 years now. I had been working in Bethel Park, PA (Store 004). Although I loved the store, sometimes the commute would take me 1.5 hours with traffic. Also they close the Liberty Tunnels at night, making it near an hour for me to get home some nights. All of this was fine since I loved the store, however, there was recently an incident with a pharmacist employed at Store 004, whom I normally do not work with, leading me to request a store transfer. I had worked with a floater pharmacist the night before, I had never worked with her before. We stayed late to make sure all the prescriptions were done, drugs put away, etc. The technician was in the corner filling scripts for 2 hours, and they seemed to me to be all filed away. I even called another employee not working to make sure we didn't have to send an order that night. It looked to me, and I close often, as if everything was done. When we went to to leave, I thought the pharmacist was leaving with us but she said she was going to stay a little longer. I'm not sure what happened that night because everything was put away when I left. The next morning when I came into work, I was immediately accused of leaving a mess there the night before. Apparently there was a stack of scripts out and not filed. She must have been looking at them after the rest of us had left because they weren't there when we left. Apparently stock bottles were not put away and there were prescriptions in baskets waiting to be filled. Those were not there when I left. I was yelled at for it all. There were passive aggressive notes attached to prescriptions I had not worked on or seen the day before that said "DANA [pretty sure she knows that's not how you spell my name anyway and just did it to act cold] YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS LAST NIGHT. CALL THIS PATIENT NOW!" She accused me leaving the place a wreck and "not caring" and sent me up to wait on customers for what was insinuated would have been the whole day. Which is fine, our customers are good people, but it was the connotation associated with her statement. It was like she was sending me in the corner because I had been bad and was being punished. I tried to work through it, but the atmosphere was so tense. I eventually started crying, and went into the personnel office where a store manager was paged for me. It was visually obvious I could not go back to work that day. I rashly said I did not want to work at that store anymore, and the manager found that acceptable and asked me if I would mind working at another Giant Eagle. I said that was fine. I understand the pharmacist was stressed and wanted to take it out on the only person in the room who had been their the night before. I don't blame her, but at the time it was just too early and I was caught completely off guard by this verbal assault. Knowing this was my greeting and that I had the rest of the day to work with her too did not help. She is not a customer and I can not make the problem go away with a gift card. She is my coworker, and I expected more out of her. I can not physically look at every script that passes though on a night, and the problems I was blamed for were prescriptions had not processed and was not even aware of. Not only that, but as an intern it is not my role to be responsible for every prescription in the pharmacy yet. It is the pharmacists, and although I understand her frustration, I feel she was out of line to take things out on me which I had no part in filling. I have been with the company for a long time, and would like to stay with the company; however, I don't think anyone can ask me to go back and work at a store where I felt so personally attacked. Especially when it is so difficult for me to commute there anyway. I would like to hear that I can be transfered to another store in Pittsburgh in need of an intern. I am already trained, and thus an asset to the company. I have been a good intern, and would like a chance to pick up where I left off at another store. Preferably closer to my home in the Bloomfield area of Pittsburgh, PA 15224. As you can tell by my commute to my last job, I am willing to travel to where needed, but I would preferably like something a little more reasonable than 1.5 hours in traffic. I hope to hear I can stay with the company, and to hear back from you with a few locations where there might be a need for me. I look forward to hearing from you soon. 11/17 Contacted receptionist at generic My HR Connection phone number, 888-892-2248, where a receptionist told me I had been terminated that day 11/17 for failure to give 2 week notice before quitting. Then offered to transfer me to Sue Martin who was in charge of my case on My HR Connection. Spoke with Sue Martin about actual incident that took place with pharmacist Michelle Lyn Jackson on morning of 11/13. Miss Martin agreed and sympathized with the scenario, and promised she would personally call the woman in charge cases from my store (Maureen) as soon as she got off the phone with me, and gave me her number to call her back the next day if I had not heard anything. 11/18 Waited until about 5:00 P.M. Then called Sue Martin again for progress on my case. She informed me she had talked to Maureen as she said she would, and Maureen had to contact someone else about the case, and I should hear back soon. Also showed interest/confusion in the fact that someone had told me I was terminated. However, I did not know the name of the receptionist who had given me that information from the 888 number. I informed her I had gotten an e-mail that my case 330110 on My HR Connection had been closed. No other follow-up was given. She seemed to be confused and unaware the case was closed as well. Agreed I should be allowed to transfer due to the circumstances and seemed to sympathize. 11/20 yet to hear any new news from anyone affiliated with Giant Eagle. 11/20 Posting on new case & 331126 Attached is a PDF of my notes pertaining to communications between any member of Giant Eagle and myself pertaining to my Case 330110. I have yet to hear any news back from the employees who would be working on the case. I would like further acknowledgment that someone is actively working on transferring me to another store or looking into the verbal and emotional abuse I received at Store 004 the morning of 11/13. I hope to hear back by Monday November 22 as to the status of my transfer. I do not believe I should be punished any further by being forced to continue to work at that current store under the circumstances, and also believe failing to transfer me to another store in light of the situation is unethical. If I still have no information by Tuesday, November 23, I will be filing for unemployment. Hope to hear from you soon! 11/20 Saturday 4:00 P.M. Spoke with Kim on Ethics Hotline 800 498 8889 and filed incident report. Told me to call back Tuesday 11/23 if I had not heard anything back. 11/21 got email case 33126 was closed. No resolution given. 11/22 10 am. Maureen called. Told me they terminated me for leaving the staff short handed that day but that they would continue to look into it. They would be sending me information on COBRA for insurance. My insurance will end in December. 12/28 Called Unemployment Compensation to see where money is since it wasnt deposited yet. Was informed I was not getting it because Giant Eagle told unemployment I quit. Have yet to receive notice from unemployment that I would not be receiving my compensation since I was terminated when they knew I was looking to transfer after the incident. The lady informed me to keep filing my unemployment, and they are just extremely backed up right now and havent gotten to my case. 12/31 Had looked into COBRA after losing job and far too expensive. Have still not received any information on it from Giant Eagle. Still no information on unemployment compensation. 01/10 No new updates. Sending email stating I still havent heard from unemployment about claim status.
