Now I have a contract? What gives?

I've had Direct TV services in my home since 2006. There have not been any problems and I've finished the original terms of my contract.in 2007 and early I called to evaluate my account for cost saving measures, possibly even reducing the programming package I currently have. I was told that I had completed the terms of my contract and the package I have was not available to new customers; that I basically had a really good deal for the cost / channel line up I have been using. I left the package the same. Fast forward to 10. I called and ordered another reciever to my current plan (for a total of four receivers). No one said anything about this order renewing my contract / service terms. No problems, except for when the wind blows hard or it rains. I've tried to bundle with AT&T / Direct TV b/c they keep mailing me fliers on cost savings. They were able to knock $5 off my bill... Ok, its a cost savings but come on! 11 U-Verse is finally available in my area!!! What a welcome change! One bill, lower cost, better service - both technical and customer service. Now Direct TV is telling me they are going to charge my debit card $220 for an early termination fee! WHAT?!?!? I haven't renewed or reinstated my contract. This makes no sense! I loved being without a contract and having the freedom of choice. Also, good luck trying to get anyone to give you an honest answer or show you where you sign a contract.

I would never go back to Direct TV or recommend them to ANYONE based on poor customer service.
