I consider myself a VERY nice person, and willing to give anyone a listen that knocks on my door. Expecting someone to talk about religion I was almost surprised when it was something I thought I would find useful, a subscription. As the two gentleman explained they were doing a contest, for their school, I didn't think twice about it because I myself was in college and it wasn't uncommon.
They kept going with their "presentation" and I honestly thought, "Wow. These two guys are pretty nice and I'd like to help them get that free trip AND donate to charity" So I signed up for two subscriptions (one for each because I felt bad), which I might mention were so EXPENSIVE! Although they assured me they were multiple year subscriptions, so I figured I was getting a great deal. (I should also mention that they were adament on recieving cash instead of check and multiple times asked for me to go to the ATM. That should have been a warning sign!)
As they left I was already thinking of cancelling because I really couldn't afford what I purchased. I examined the receipts I was given and realized you were only given 3 days to cancel (Which was WAY different than one of the guys explained. I was told you receive a call when the check clears in 2 weeks, and you could cancel at that time) So since I'm fairly internet saavy I decided to look up the company and was i surprised of what I found. The first listing was from complaint explaining a very similar experience I just had.
Instantly I got worried that I was just scammed but luckily I live in an area of apartment complexes. I walked around searching for these guys because I knew they were still here. Finally I found them and said I really couldn't afford them and needed my checks back. At first they were understanding and asked if I could keep one subscription. After I refused they were silent and rude, definately not the two guys i met just 20 minutes ago.
They asked for my receipts back, and not thinking I exchanged them for my checks. Hopefully I saved myself from this scam, but only time will tell if they submit my order anyways and I get a bill for magazines that I will probably never see.
I will always wonder how two seemingly nice guys can do this to people day after day, and feel good about it...
