My mom received a letter from these people promising her a $5,000 check. After reading the letter, several red flags popped up in my head.
First red flag: "a contest of skill is not a lottery" huh? I asked my mom how did she entered, and she told me online.
Second red flag: location. I scanned both the letter and the envelope that came with it. Australia? International? Didn't sit right with me.
Third red flag: the "so-called" puzzle. When i saw the puzzle, i nearly laughed. 20 5 = 25 21 or 23. That is how they probably snatch innocent people; that and the promise of a huge check.
Thank god my sixth sense kicked in. My mom is in a financial bind at the moment, and the $5,000 sounded so alluring to her. I hate to tell her it's a scam, but i don't her to face even more hardship had she signed her name and mailed it back to them. I can't believe con artists are taking advantage of people who are struggling in this recession. It's very, very sad.
Also, thank god for usacomplaints.com; otherwise, i wouldn't have found other reports to confirm my suspicions.
