I had the same problem with this company as Patrick of West Hollywood and Susan of Granada Hills, but over the installation of a range ignition. It was good to validate my impression that the company was price - gouging. Although the Ross I spoke with called it "free-enterprise" and charge all the traffic will bare, if you can get away with it (or the customer approves the estimate). He likened it to how doctors overcharge.
He even sent me a fax showing all the "hidden expenses" behind a service charge, i.E. Training, travel, taxes, benefits, stationary, benefits, etc, etc.
He said it is legitimate to mark up a $40-60 part to $127. They even had the audacity to give me a $60 discount on this blatantly overcharged simple job. He said I could have refused the estimate and call another company. I explained that one doesn't get multiple estimates from an appliance company for a small job while the repair man is in the house and you need to use the appliance.
I have not experienced such behavior from any other reputable repair company. And then have them justify it by the free enterprise system.
I told Ross I would broadcast my dissatisfaction far and wide.
I am glad there are web-sites like these. I will look for more and post again.
